What Is Precice Max (PMax)?
Precice Max (Pmax) is the latest generation of the Precice intramedullary nail system, developed by NuVasive Specialized Orthopedics (now part of Globus Medical). It received FDA approval in December 2023 and represents a significant leap forward from the widely used Precice 2.
Like its predecessor, Pmax is a fully internal, magnetically controlled titanium nail placed inside the femur or tibia. There are no external fixators, no pins through the skin, and no visible hardware — the entire system operates from within the bone.
What sets Precice Max apart is its re-engineered design: a thicker titanium wall, a stronger magnetic motor, and larger nail diameter options (up to 14 mm). These improvements translate directly into higher weight-bearing capacity, earlier mobilization, and a more reliable lengthening experience for patients.
How Precice Max Limb Lengthening Works
The Pmax procedure follows a medically proven, four-phase process — fully internal, precisely controlled, and designed for maximum patient comfort.
Surgical Implantation
The Precice Max nail is inserted into the bone (femur or tibia) through a minimally invasive procedure under general anesthesia. No external fixator is attached — the system is entirely internal.
Latency Phase
A short rest period of 3 to 5 days allows the bone to begin its initial healing before the lengthening process starts. During this time, you remain under close medical supervision.
Distraction Phase
Using the ERC (External Remote Controller), the nail gradually lengthens the bone at approximately 1 mm per day. You control the process yourself — at home, with a simple button press.
Consolidation
Once your target height is reached, the newly formed bone gradually hardens and solidifies. Regular X-ray monitoring ensures everything is healing as planned.
